Wind power development in low wind speed areas: small wind turbines for weak wind resources
In areas with low average wind speeds, conventional wind turbines tend to be less efficient and less economical. Small wind turbines targeting weak wind resources have improved their ability to capture energy under light wind conditions through a series of specialized designs, providing a feasible solution for wind power applications in such areas.
The core design of this type of wind turbine is to reduce the starting wind speed and optimize power generation performance at low wind speeds. The main technical paths include: using longer blades to increase the swept area and capture more energy when the wind speed is low; using specially designed airfoils to reduce air resistance, making the blades easier to start and rotate in breeze; using lightweight and high-strength composite materials to make blades to reduce the moment of inertia. Some models increase the number of blades to increase torque in weak winds to ensure smooth start.
In addition to aerodynamic design, the fan system also needs to be optimized as a whole. Use high-efficiency permanent magnet generator and low-loss transmission system to reduce mechanical losses. Equipped with an intelligent controller, it can maintain efficient operation within a wider wind speed range and effectively store or utilize weak electric energy.
Despite optimization, installing turbines in areas with low wind speeds still requires an objective assessment of resources and management of expectations. Before investing, it is crucial to conduct on-site wind measurements. The main value of such wind turbines is to provide basic power for off-grid or unstable power grid areas, or as a supplement to distributed energy resources. The key to its successful application lies in refined site selection, accurate matching with the actual needs of users, and rational expectations for power generation.
