Highway Wind-Solar Hybrid System: An Innovative Model for Median Strip Power Supply
In the highway sector, utilizing the central median and along-route space to deploy small wind turbines and solar photovoltaic panels forms a wind-solar hybrid system, providing green electricity to along-route facilities (such as monitoring systems, lighting, toll booths, and service areas). This is an innovative distributed energy application model. It effectively utilizes the linear space resources of highways, achieving the integration of energy production, local consumption, and facility power supply.
The core of this model is the coordinated layout of small wind turbines and photovoltaic panels. Low-noise, compact vertical-axis or small horizontal-axis wind turbines can be installed in the wide central median or on slopes, utilizing the wind turbulence generated by high-speed vehicle travel and natural wind to generate electricity. Simultaneously, solar photovoltaic panels are laid on the median ground, sound barriers, or slopes. The wind and solar power complement each other temporally: photovoltaic power generation is primary during the day, while wind turbines supplement power generation at night and during inclement weather, resulting in a smoother and more stable power output and improved power supply reliability.
System implementation must balance safety, efficiency, and ease of maintenance. The installation of all equipment must prioritize driving safety. Wind turbines must be designed to prevent tipping and blade detachment, and photovoltaic panels must be glare-proof and prevent debris from flying. The system adopts a modular design for easy and rapid installation and replacement. Power supply is managed by an intelligent controller, prioritizing the nearest electrical facilities. Excess power can be fed into energy storage devices or local microgrids. Its advantages include reducing long-distance dependence on the traditional power grid and lowering the electricity costs and carbon footprint of facility operation.
This model not only provides a new path for the green and low-carbon operation of highways but also serves as a mobile window showcasing clean energy technologies, demonstrating significant implications for promoting the integrated development of transportation infrastructure and renewable energy.
